Calrec IP Primer Part 4: Bandwidth

Welcome to the fourth in an eight-part series of articles on AoIP!

Over the next five weeks, we will be releasing an IP chapter every Wednesday as part of Calrec’s latest IP Primer. The IP Primer will build up your knowledge of IP and will enable you to create reliable AoIP networks to meet the needs of your desired workflow without defining or compromising operations.

We’ll look at Bandwidth, Latency/Jitter, QoS, Switches and Network Design. This week we dive into Bandwidth in more detail.

Bandwidth is affected by lots of things like packet time, channel counts and sample rates. Sensible distribution of bandwidth is essential to design scalable and reliable IP networks. This chapter of Calrec’s IP Primer explains why it’s important, and what some of the pitfalls are.

Calrec IP Primer Part 4: Bandwidth

Bandwidth is a simple concept – it’s really just about how much data can be produced or consumed by a device on your IP network. The good news is that audio bandwidth is much less demanding than video, but that doesn’t mean that you don’t need to pay it the proper attention.

Lots of things affect bandwidth. Packet time has a huge influence on bandwidth, as does channel counts, sample rates and the choice of codec.

In this chapter of Calrec’s IP Primer, we learn how every network decision we make affects bandwidth, and we discover how each of those decisions can lead to over-subscription. In order to design scalable and reliable IP networks, the correct distribution of bandwidth is essential, and we spend a little time looking at that.

We’ll look at bandwidth again in a more practical way when we discuss Network Design in a few weeks, but this chapter introduces a number of concepts and includes a set of example bandwidths for various audio formats in a detailed Appendix. These numbers consider inter-packet gaps which make these examples more accurate references.
