Calrec IP Primer Part 1: Introduction

Welcome to the first in an eight-part series of articles on AoIP!

The IP Primer will build up your knowledge of IP and will enable you to create reliable AoIP networks to meet the needs of your desired workflow without defining or compromising operations.

We’ll look at Networks, Multicast, Precision Time Protocol (PTP), Bandwidth, Latency/Jitter, QoS, Switches and Network Design. This week is an introduction to IP technologies and standards, and we’ll take a look at some of the terms you need to know.

More and more, everything we interact with is networked, from phones and computers to fridges and lamps! Networks support the way we live, how we talk to each other, how we automate our lives and how we consume content. We are defined by them. This IP Primer helps break down how IP networks are defined in broadcast environments to help understand how to design the most efficient network possible.

Calrec IP Primer Part 1: Introduction

A well-designed network should be invisible to the end-user, but the good news is that IP technologies are so flexible that they can be adapted to meet these needs exactly.

This means there is no single standard network infrastructure which will meet everyone’s requirements, so networks have to be carefully designed from the outset.

In this introduction, we examine what a network is, we assess some of the benefits and we outline the main standards for efficient and interoperable IP networks.
